The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, Brasília.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
