EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
