Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis suggest the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for information.
A senior representative commented the incident made him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
